Growing Up: Hermosa and Manhattan Beach in Photos 1963 to 1980 Hardcover – October 21, 2025

Growing Up is a photographic memoir of my hometown, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach, California. In 1963 my parents moved from Santa Monica to Hermosa Beach. My dad, an avid amateur photographer, took photos of Hermosa and Manhattan Beach on his frequent walks through the two towns. We lived on 24th Street in Hermosa Beach and his walks often followed 22nd Street to the Strand then along the Strand to Pier Avenue. He would walk up Pier Avenue and stop at Either/Or Bookstore. My dad read several books a week, so Either/Or was a necessary stop. There are fewer photos of Manhattan Beach. If there had been a bookstore as good as Either/Or in Manhattan Beach perhaps there would be more photos taken there. Read more
